On set with the Resort '14 Collection
“Look everywhere but down the camera. I don’t
like the model making eye contact with the viewer”. Yep today was the day, we
were to shoot the Resort ’14 collection look book! This process was completely
new to me as I had never been to a professional fashion shoot. My excitement
was high, and I was amazed to see the amount of preparation that goes into the
making of a fashion house necessity.
Look books are the permanent fixtures of
any fashion line. They feature the garments
that make up the season’s collection and as such need to be flawless.
The day began with hair and make up for the
model, which took place in the company’s PR studio. She was then dressed in a ‘look’
that was photographed for around 15 minutes, that's around 60 pictures of the
same outfit to get the ‘perfect shot’. I understand it is important but the
saying ‘not a hair out of place’ literally applied – the hairdresser was called
over in between every five shots to restyle the models hair.
Not only was this task very time consuming
but also exhausting. This was evident in
the models reaction as after the fifth look she burst into tears and collapsed
on the couch. Very dramatic, but at the
same time I could understand her hitting the wall, I was exhausted just
dressing her!
This episode also signaled lunchtime! Going
around the room gathering the orders from the staff and crew was one of the most
complicated procedures I had encountered at this internship – and I’m from a
family of six so I know fussy orders but this was an entirely new level. There were, vegetarian, vegan, gluten free,
protein only, liquid only and ‘whatever I thought looked good’ orders from the
workers. Terrified at the possibility of
stuffing up someone’s order off I went to Gourmet Garage, the go-to place for
specialty foods in SoHo. Of course they
didn’t have half the requests but I managed to get adequate substitutes!
After a slight rejuvenation we continued to
shoot the look book until the sunset. It was time to call it a wrap. With all the shots taken it was a tiring,
emotional yet successful day all around!
One of the 'looks' from the Resort '14 Collection. (Sneaky shot of the hairdresser who was on call all day!)
