“Bella, we’re working with a stylist from Vogue this weekend are you free to come in and help?”….umm YES! I was invited to be the on hand intern Saturday afternoon, as the final edits were to take place for the Spring ’14 collection.

We began the day by setting the inspiration boards up against the wall.  These boards are the heart of the fashion company, being full of inspirational images, sketches and photographs of the model dressed in mock designs of the upcoming spring collection.

Shortly after we finished setting up the stylist arrived with her son in tow. She was dressed in a lose fitting summer romper paired with patent leather tan lace ups, making this the perfect work outfit for the humid New York heat.

I was in charge dressing the model in the make shift designs as well as keeping the stylists son entertained and happy (this included running around china town to find a ‘bubble tea’ drink…for a four year old.). Watching the stylist work with my boss, compromising on designs and coming up with completely new ones was an amazing insight into the fashion design process.

The most interesting part of the day was watching the stylist critically analyse the designs, pointing out the flaws and high points for each idea.  This process highlighted how the final designs of any collection are not the fruits of one person but rather a team effort!

Careful planning was also taken when choosing the order of the designs for the upcoming catwalk show.  The stylists made interesting comments like “you can’t have too many prints without a blank design to break it up”.  The casual talk about whether or not the fashion editors would receive the designs well called my boss to say “when will Anna like black again? I LOVVVVE black”. The stylist replied with “you know that she doesn’t like it because it’s too hard to shoot! It doesn’t look good on paper that’s why”.  The fact that they were casually slipping in Anna Wintour’s preferences in their conversation was something I definitely picked up on, and again had to pinch myself to make sure it was actually happening.

This was by far the best day at my internship to date! I have been inspired to play fashion stylist to my own outfit choices. – Something I didn’t know I could make a career out of! Light bulb moment!

Ps. When I got home I was so impressed by the work of the stylist that I Googled her name.  I couldn’t believe what I found out.  She is a former model, currently working as a fashion editor at Vogue and stylist, and.........none other than Anna Wintour’s daughter in law! That’s right, I was working with the daughter in law of the fashion queen and babysitting her grandchild. talk about a small world

Love Bella
